Hans Blokpoel was born and educated in the Netherlands before emigrating to Canada in 1967 where he worked as a wildlife biologist for the Canadian Wildlife Service till 1998.
He has taken courses in sculpture both in Holland (with Jan Kalsbeek in Leiden) and in Canada (with Bruce Garner at the Ottawa School of Art). He has been a keen photographer most of his life.
